Battlefield 2 Commander Tips

Here are some tips and tricks for being a Battlefield 2 Commander that I've accumulated from other sites as well as from what I've learned myself for about 3 in game hours. I'm not an expert, just making some tips and suggestions for those having difficulty.

  • Persuade as many players as possible to form squads, preferably with at least 2-3 players per squad, no smaller (except possibly sniper + SpecOps squads)

  • I'd recommend playing as an Engineer and find a good hiding spot nearby your teams artillery, radar and UAV trailer installations so you can repair them yourself rather than wasting a supply crate.

  • Use VOIP! I can't stress this enough. It's much easier to give voice commands to all squads at once than using the in game command interface (but use them in conjunction if possible.

  • Commend your squads that obey your orders, or ones that are performing well.

  • Scan the map prior to deploying the UAV. Make sure there are enemy's where you are planning on deploying the UAV. Don't waste it.

  • Don't send your squads running all over the map. Send them to the nearest objective they can handle.

  • After a successful, heated battle for a flag, drop a supply crate for your squads to resupply and heal. Don't wait for them to ask for one!

  • I thought this one would go without saying, but in the past few games I've played, I guess not. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to be on the front lines and play the commander role. You will suck at both. Play one or the other. Period.

  • Do not drop artillery, under any circumstances, in the close proximity of your squads, unless they explicitly ask for it.

  • Don't waste artillery on snipers. Just point them out on the map to your squads, or order a smaller squad to their position to take them out.

  • When attempting to take a heavily fortified control point, try to have two squads come from multiple directions. Don't just direct them head on, they will usually lose.

  • Communicate, communicate, communicate!

  • Cheap, but sometimes effective trick: if no one on your team is in need of a resupply, you can order an artillery strike in the center of a populated enemy control point, then drop a supply crate immediately. Most of the time, the enemy will all jump on the supply crate right away, resulting in a number of artillery kills.

    • cheap is rite why dont you learn to relly kill you oposition??? insted of tricking poeple to come out to the supplybox and than kill them. it is poor sportsmanship

    • Bad sportsmanship is punishing for an accidental TK or sniping an uncappable flag point. I don't think there is anything wrong with the ole' bait and switch supply drop.

    • There is no such thing as poor sportsmanship in real life battle.
The aim is to kill in any way possible. To exploit any weakness that the enemy has and act on it!
Yeah BF2 is only a game but the more realistic it is (within reason of course) the better it is.
Nothing pisses me off more than some dumb ass admin saying..no bunny hopping no this and no that etc etc.I couldnt give a toss if YOU bunny hop or do whatever you want. It just makes it all the funnier when i frag your ass!

    • I agree with war is a MOTHER @#%@^$!!! I am a vet 2 tours since 911, they dont care how they kill us ,why should i care how my enemy dies . As long as my soldiers live, triumph and over come , I will kill as a commander by any means available!

    • the point of the first reply is simply that doing such things makes the game less realistic. You'd never "bunny hop" in a real war, nor would you drop a supply crate and then artillery the area. There are two ways of playing this game... realistically or by any means necessary.

its up to each host to decide how he wants his game to be run.

    • There's nothing wrong with that tactic bro. If you're enemy isn't going to learn or realize that they're getting hit with artillary, i'm pretty sure they deserve to get blown 50 ft. in the air.

    • Realism ends when I can put two sniper rounds into an enemy and they still keep coming. Or miss the head and hit their throat and they still keep coming. Or some jet rolls in and drops bombs on my head at a flag, over and over again. Or I clean out an area (sweeping it clean as you might in real life) and then some enemy 'spawns' and takes me out from a previously clear area behind me. Spawn? Is that realistic? It's all about who's learned the tricks of the game. So play it as a game and leave realism to future or heavily modded versions of the game.

    • yeah, what he said.

    • You said it - how real is two sniper rounds not killing someone. I play as a sniper and the most irritating thing is when I wait for that perfect shot, go undetected, and am spotted because my head shot didn't kill my victim. Personally I enjoyed these tips - and the idea of dropping a supply crate and then using artillery is superb.

    • Only a supply drop isnt that tempting to go to when its not dropped by your commander and it happens to drop in a base that you control.

    • I know they made the game with a fairness director and all. But please dont call it realistic. Cause Atillery will kill snipers. Please.
